Your Job Search Has Been Ineffective. Here's Why.

You have made your cover letter, resume, and LinkedIn profile as good as they can be.

You checked your social media accounts to ensure that your candidacy will not go up in flames because of something irresponsible you posted that a recruiter or hiring manager discovers.

Yet, you are still not hearing back from employers after submitting your applications. What gives?

The truth is that handling those things is only the first step in the process. They are necessary, but not sufficient, conditions for a successful job search process. What are you missing? Why has your job search been ineffective thus far?

There is a high likelihood that your job search is faltering due to ineffective networking.

Effective networking is more than just cold emailing and cold calling individuals or sending invitations to connect on LinkedIn. And for college students, it is more than going to a few info sessions and other employer events on campus.

All of those things are generally helpful and can be part of an effective networking approach. However, you need to devise a networking strategy that figures prominently in your overall job search efforts, and your ultimate end goal should inform your networking strategy and the specific things that you do.

Map the actions you are taking to the goals they are helping you achieve. How does Networking Action A get you closer to Goal #1? Networking Action B to Goal #2? Networking Action C to Goal #3?

This creates clarity for you and focuses your efforts as you navigate through the job search process.

It will also increase your chances of success.
