Which Social Media Platforms Should Your Business Use?

Many new business owners or business owners who are new to social media marketing (SMM) think that it is necessary for their business to be present and active on every social media platform.
That is a misconception, and it is one that can cause you to waste valuable time and resources.
Here are two questions you should ask yourself when evaluating whether you should use a platform for SMM.
1. What is the social media platform in question used for?
Each social media platform is structured around certain functionality and features. For example, Instagram is a photo-driven platform; Twitter, on the other hand, is all about communicating your thoughts in 140 or fewer characters (this is not to say that text is unimportant for Instagram or that pictures are unimportant for Twitter, however). The platform's functionality should guide how you use it and what type of content you create for it.
2. How does the use of that platform further your business objectives?
As mentioned earlier, it is unnecessary and unwise to be present and active on every social media platform.
Identify your business objectives. How does Facebook further Objective #1? How does Instagram further Objective #2? How does Twitter reinforce your efforts toward accomplishing both of those objectives?
If you do not answer these types of questions and instead build social media accounts on Twitter, Snapchat, Last.fm, and 15 other platforms for your business, you will almost certainly be wasting valuable time and resources as you blindly create content on several platforms that are doing little to nothing to further your business objectives. Be sure to ask yourself how using a platform helps you achieve your business goals, and limit your social media focus to 3-5 platforms.
